Stainless Steel Coil Surface Finishes Explained – BA, 2B, No.1, 8K, and Hairline

The surface finish of a stainless steel coil determines not only its appearance but also its suitability for specific environments. Choosing the correct finish can extend product life and reduce maintenance costs.

BA – Bright Annealed Finish

BA surface is produced by cold rolling followed by bright heat treatment in a protective atmosphere. This creates a highly reflective, mirror-like finish without oxidation. BA finish is widely used for kitchen utensils, kitchenware, and architectural applications where aesthetics matter. It offers excellent cleanliness and is easy to sanitize.

2B – Smooth and Bright Finish

2B is the most common finish for general applications. After cold rolling, the coil undergoes heat treatment and pickling, followed by a skin pass rolling process. This produces a brighter, smoother surface than standard No.1 finish. Typical applications include medical instruments, tableware, and general industrial components requiring a clean surface.

No.1 – Industrial Grade Finish

No.1 finish is created by hot rolling, annealing, and pickling. The result is a white, matte pickled surface. This finish prioritizes function over form, making it ideal for chemical industry equipment and industrial storage tanks where corrosion resistance matters more than appearance.

8K Mirror and Hairline Finishes

For high-end decorative needs, 8K mirror finish is polished with abrasives over 800 mesh to achieve a reflective surface suitable for mirrors, reflectors, and interior-exterior building decoration. Hairline finish features continuous linear polishing lines, commonly seen on escalators, kitchenware, vehicles, and architectural components.
